Appryl (51% Elf Atochem / 49% BP Chemicals) is announcing two major investments in polypropylene. This investment represents 1 billion FF.
The capacity of the Gonfreville-l’Orcher plant (Seine-Maritime, France) is being increased from 140,000 to 200,000 tonne/year by the end of 1999, producing block copolymers (propylene - ethylene).
In Grangemouth (Scotland, United Kingdom), a new 250,000 tonne/year homopolymer plant is due to become operational in late 1999.
The Grangemouth facility, whilst benefitting from on-site propylene integration, is designed to meet the needs of the UK market which currently imports around 400,000 tonne/year of polypropylene.
These two investment projects will operate with Appryl’s latest technological developments, in particular using a new block copolymerisation process developed and tested at Elf Atochem’s Mont research centre (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).
Appryl operates an additional production site at Lavéra in the South of France (Bouches-du-Rh?ne), the largest polypropylene production plant in the world with a 270,000 tonne/year capacity.
In 2000, Appryl’s three sites, covering Europe from North to South, will have a total capacity exceeding 700,000 tonne/year of polypropylene. Appryl will enhance its competitive position and will be the only fully integrated manufacturer to have all its plants’ capacities exceeding 200,000 tonne/year.
Appryla polypropylene has applications in a wide range of sectors :
- Packaging, where it offers transparency, comfort, light weight and aesthetic
